Caplock Muzzleloader

Mercury fulminate is a high-explosive that is very sensitive to friction and shock. This is the material that is on the inside of a percussion cap, which were introduced in the 1830's. The percussion cap is placed on the "nipple" which has a small hole leading to the inside of the firearm's barrel. When the trigger is pulled, the hammer swings down, strikes the percussion cap which sends a flame down into the barrel to ignite the gunpowder.
