Firearm Incidents

Most firearm incidents occur in the home. However, firearm incidents in the field are also known to happen and can cause serious injury or death. These are the most common causes of firearm incidents that occur while hunting in Minnesota:

  • Careless behavior
  • Leaning a loaded firearm against someting
  • Having a loaded firearm inside a vehicle
  • Swinging out of a safe zone of fire
  • Crossing a fence or other obstacle with a loaded firearm
  • Failing to have a safe backstop behind a target
  • Mistaking another person for a game animal
  • A loaded firearm's trigger gets caught on a twig or other object, and discharges.
