Safety on the Range and in the Field
Crossbow hunters can go to a shooting range in order to practice their shooting skills. When at the range, be aware of the range master's signals and follow their instructions. When the range is "active", you can cock your crossbow and load a bolt. Always point the crossbow down range when the crossbow is loaded.
In any hunting situation, you should only cock your crossbow when you have reached the hunting location, be it a blind or treestand. However, if hunting from a treestand, be sure to cock the crossbow BEFORE you head up into your stand.
The crossbow can remain in the cocked position the entire time you are hunting. The string and limbs are designed to hold the stress for many hours at a time.
