Crossbows are equipped with a safety mechanism. Once the crossbow is cocked, the first action of every user must be to engage the safety immediately. Most crossbows have a manual safety which the shooter must engage. However, other models of crossbows have an automatic safety that will engage as soon as the crossbow is cocked. It is important to know which type of safety your crossbow has, so that you don't disengage the safety unintentionally.
Always remember that the safety is a mechanical device, and consequently subject to failure. It is for this reason that the hunter should always practice proper handling and safety in the event that the safety does fail.
